We had a great time running the Kanab 10k so I thought I'd give you a review of the race itself. Kanab is a small town in southern Utah. It's 2 hours north of the Grand Canyon's North Rim and 6 hours away from the Grand Canyon's South Rim.
The race has been held the Saturday before Mother's Day every year since 1987. It starts at Moqui Cave (elevation 5275 ft) and goes along Highway 89 (be sure and look around at all of the red rock formations). This section is mostly downhill with a couple of small, short hills. Once you turn off the highway and are on the town's roads it gets challenging. The whole last mile is uphill (an average of 5% grade). The last 1/3 mile is a straightaway with the finish line in sight so you can see the timer. The finish line is next to the city park (one of the prettiest city parks I've ever seen). Along the way there was a water/gatorade stop at miles 3 and 5. There was also a clothing drop at the start, as well as miles 1 and 2 (it was around 38-40 degrees at the 7:30am starting line).
At the finish there was lots of water, fruit (strawberries, cantalope, watermelon, apples, and bananas), muffins and donut holes. The awards are beautiful red rock sculptures. If you want one of these beautiful awards you'll have to run really well, it's a fast field. Me, my husband, and my dad all ran PRs and none of us got into the top 3 in our age groups.
Overall it was a very well managed race. It's a small field but very fast, so get your racing shoes on for next year's 25th running of the Kanab 10k.
